Paleo Slow Cooker Recipes – Taste and Convenience

It really doesn’t matter what food regime you are following; when you have a busy job and a family to look after, then the easier preparation and cooking is for everyone concerned then so much the better for everyone. Slow cooking has been a favourite of mine for years. Here I talk about how we can apply that to our Paleo lifestyle and get the best of all worlds….enjoy.

Paleo Slow Cooking

Commercial slow cookers are an invention of the 1970s. They have maintained their popularity in that time with little or no change to the basic design. Microwaves momentarily slowed sales of slow cookers but it became clear quite quickly that microwaves just cannot compete with slow cookers when it comes to keeping food moist tender and full of flavour.

You might not immediately associate the art of slow cooking with the science of Paleo but mercifully they are actually great bed fellows. There are some real benefits for everyone by using this cooking method. Here are just a few:

  • A slow cooker is a great time saving device perfect for cooking fresh ingredients.
  • As with slow cooking generally, preparation is where the time is spent
  • Once the preparation is done and the ingredients are added to the pot the cooking takes care of itself.
  • Overnight or during the day your slow cooker is doing the work while you get on and do other things.
  • Unlike your conventional oven you are unlikely to burn anything and the meal just needs to be plated when you are ready.
  • Slow cooking retains the moisture and is great for slowly combining and getting the benefit of great flavours.
  • Purchase of a good slow cooker is relatively inexpensive and it will last you for years.

Some Paleo Slow Cooker Insights

Let me share some wee insights I have discovered as I have explored the possibilities of paleo slow cooking.

You will never be short of sources for Paleo slow cooker recipes. On line, at the Library, in the bookshop, by word of mouth and even by experimentation the sources of inspiration are endless.

Most if not all recipes are adaptable to meet your own preferences or needs. For instance don’t be scared to substitute various meats )put pork in a recipe designed for chicken or nutty mushrooms in place of any meat if you are a Paleo vegetarian)

Slow cooked meals seem to benefit from flavour enhancement if they are cooled frozen and reheated from 48 hours onward. Don’t ask me why this is (probably to do with enzymes) but by accident I have had some wonderful experiences by making use of this technique.

Stirring in fresh ingredients right at the end of cooking creates yet another dimension to the taste sensations. A great example of this is just before serving a Paleo curry stir in some fresh roughly torn coriander. This absolutely lifts the flavours and provides an aromatic taste sensation.

Don’t preheat your cooker. Better results are to be had by combining ingredients as per your recipe and then switching it on and letting it heat up thereafter.

Four Paleo 10 Minute Recipes

The overall purpose of my posts to encourage people to experience Paleo but without it becoming a hindrance to the general balance of life. So I am always looking for what busy family members can do to make it easier. What could be easier than 10 minute Paleo slow cooker recipes?

To get you started and perhaps encourage you to go looking for more options here are four of my favourite recipes that I have picked up from various places and adapted over the years. Given that I have discussed breakfast elsewhere on my site I thought I will provide a couple of appetiser or starter options and a couple of main course options although I would say in keeping with my keep Paleo easy option don’t be tied by convention; you can adapt these to fit any meal time at any part of the day:

Mushrooms with Herbs and Garlic Appetiser

As I said earlier in this post mushrooms are a great meat substitute and great for health as well as being available in a range of interesting varieties. Give this one a go you will not be disappointed. If you are vegetarian don’t use the chicken stock. You will need:

  • 1Kg of Your Favourite Meaty Nutty Mushrooms
  • 6 Non Bleached Garlic Cloves – peeled and minced
  • 1/4 Cup of Vegetable or Chicken Stock
  • 2Tbsps Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 Tbsp Dijon Mustard
  • 1/4 Cup chopped Fresh Parsley
  • 1 Tsp dried Thyme
  • 1 Tsp dried Rosemary
  • Generous Pinch of Sea Salt
  • Freshly Cracked Black Pepper – to taste
  1. In a wee bowl using a fork whisk together the stock, oil, mustard, rosemary, thyme, salt and pepper.
  2. Combine the mushrooms and garlic in the slow cooker and add the stock mixture.
  3. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours.
  4. Stir in the parsley immediately before serving.

Chicken Liver Bacon and Garlic Appetiser

Good quality offal or organ meats are healthy Paleo options. The gaminess of livers is balanced off by the smokiness of the bacon. They make great appetisers but you could easily purée this and make it in top a really tasty pate which can be eaten with vegetable crudités. You will need

  • 500gm Free Range Chicken Livers
  • 250gm Nutty Button Mushrooms- quartered
  • 6 Non Bleached Garlic Cloves – peeled and minced
  • 4 rashers Free Range Bacon
  • 1 Chopped Onion
  • 1 Cup strong stock (beef, chicken or pork)
  • 1 Tsp dried Thyme
  • 1 Tsp dried Rosemary
  • Generous Pinch of Sea Salt
  • Freshly Cracked Black Pepper – to taste
  • 1/4 Cup chopped Fresh Parsley
  1. Combine the livers, bacon, mushrooms, garlic onion, stock, rosemary thyme, salt and pepper.
  2. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours.
  3. Stir in the Parsley immediately before serving.

Paleo Vegan Cauliflower Mushroom Bolognese Main

Yes you can be vegetarian or vegan and still practice Paleo! This recipe will provide a great sauce which can be used in a variety of ways in the same way that a beef bolognese might be used. You will need:

  • 1 Medium to Large Cauliflower – break into florets
  • 500gm Nutty Mushrooms – finely chopped
  • 1 Red Onion -finely chopped
  • 2 Tins (250gmx2) Crushed Tomatoes
  • 1/4 Cup Vegetable Stock
  • 2 Tsps crushed Garlic
  • 1 Tsp Dried Oregano
  • 1 Tsp Sea Salt
  • Pinch of Red Pepper Flakes
  • !/4 Cup Fresh Basil – chopped
  1. Bring together in the slow cooker the cauliflower, mushrooms, onion, tomatoes, stock, crushed garlic, oregano, salt and red pepper and combine.
  2. Cover and cook for 8 hours.
  3. With a potato masher lightly mash to break up the cooked cauliflower.
  4. Stir in the fresh Basil and serve.

Paleo Vegan Lasagna Main

It is but a short journey from Bolognese to Lasagna. So taking the previous recipe and adding some substitutes for traditional Lasagna sheets we arrive at a delicious meal bot filling and simple to cook. The egg plant can be replaced with zucchini, sweet potato or sliced leek or even thick sliced prosciutto. When using egg plant you can prevent the lasagna from being too watery by placing the sliced egg plant in a sieve or colander and sprinkling with salt for an hour. You can then drain and use. The spinach should be thoroughly pressed to remove excess water. You will need;

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil – to great the pot sides
  • Above Bolognese Recipe Complete
  • 2 Egg Plants – or suggested substitute
  • 500gm Thawed Frozen spinach – divided in two
  1. Grease the pot with the oil.
  2. Spread 1/4 of the sauce on the base of the pot.
  3. Add a layer of egg plant or substitute.
  4. Add half the spinach.
  5. Repeat layering and finish with a layer of egg pant or substitute
  6. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours.

So How About It?

Why don’t you try these and feel free to use the basic recipe and adapt it to suit your tastes. As long as you understand flavour combinations it is almost impossible to get slow cooking wrong, It is a very forgiving method that will give you back your time and it is always great to come home after a hard day’s work to great cooking smells from the slow cooker.

I do hope that you will get some inspiration from these examples you can also find the Paleo Food List for Beginners here.

  4. With the hectic lifestyles these days, having a healthy diet is necessary. It is good to prepare simple and nutritious home cook meal. It is good idea that the meal to be prepared with ease. Well, slow cooking is popular with family with babies and young kids. It is good to cook porridge and soup. My mother used to do that when we were young. It is very cost effective. Life is tough in those days. It was considered to be a good meal back then. I think the idea is good. Hence, young couple with young kids may not like the idea. Preparation may be easy, it took too long for the food to be cook. It will be great to have attractive food recipes for them. Although the steps look easy, it is difficult to follow through. Based on my experience, passion in cooking is necessary.

Food preparation is a good way to gain the experience of cooking. Knowing the preparation steps is easy, doing it is a different situation. The most difficult part is remembering the steps. Perhaps, it is great to use videos to show the preparation procedures. Which is a lot easier to understand, especially for beginners.

    • Thanks David I appreciate the comments. The recipes I have chosen here actually take no more than 10 minutes each to prepare.  The cooking takes care of itself and that is the point it is so quick and easy. Think about this: You come home from a long day at the office play with the kids have dinner maybe catch up on a bit of news of the day.  You then gather the ingredients on the bench take the 10 minutes it takes to prepare them place then in the cold cooker and take the rest of the night to enjoy your leisure and get ready for work the next day.  Next morning while preparing breakfast you walk over to the slow cooker switch it on to low and forget about it.  When you come home that night you are met with the great smell of paleo cooking and all you have to do is add the fresh ingredient such as parsley or coriander…what could be simpler?  Be adventurous have a go!
